Alphaloop Concept Design

This building integrates with the new Alpharetta AlphaLoop trail network & provides rooftop green space, a community gathering place, and reclaims previously wasted space by straddling a floodplain.

Alpharetta Horizon 2040 Comprehensive Plan Pre-Survey

Alpharetta has always needed to get resident input to inform the city’s future direction via updates to their Comprehensive Plan, but they never had much success getting input from many residents. On top of that, they weren’t asking the right questions. As a Design Intern, I rewrote all the copy, introduced the Comp Plan team to Typeform, showed them how to use Conditional Logic in surveys to pare down the questions each respondent must answer, & brought modern graphic design to the table. My efforts resulted in the largest survey response Alpharetta has ever seen & gave them data that proved invaluable to the planning process.

Community Development Internship

After working on the Alphaloop, I interned with the City of Alpharetta Community Development Department in the summer of 2020. In this role, I shifted focus from current developments to helping lay the groundwork for Horizon 2040; the comprehensive plan that serves as a visionary roadmap for Alpharetta’s growth from now until 2040. Alpharetta finalized and adopted the Horizon 2040 plan in October 2021. Here are two of the projects I led during this time.

Infographics developed using Survey Data

Alpharetta City Image Survey Proposal

I was able to give this presentation in which I give a brief introduction to graphic design best practices and advocate that we develop a survey gathering community sentiment that would be used as the basis of a visual rebrand to the Alpharetta City Council. We got here because my department noticed that many people didn’t know about the Comprehensive plan and that if they did know about it they hadn’t read it or hadn’t gotten very far. They knew that Increasing community engagement is key in developing plans that truly reflect what the community needs and wants, and set out looking for ways to encourage more participation and education regarding Horizon 2040. Having read through some of the outgoing comprehensive plans, my biggest takeaway was that the old documents were densely packed with information, lacked hierarchy, and didn’t highlight what was important. It was like reading a textbook or a bad newspaper. I knew I wouldn’t be around to actually design Horizon 2040, but I hoped that I could leave a lasting impression that would manifest in better graphic design down the road.

Now that Horizon 2040 has been published, I believe my efforts were successful as It is a much more intentional and inviting read than its predecessors.
